Where to Stay in Tirana for a Bovilla Lake Day

Blloku, the streets around Skanderbeg Square, or a Durrës beach hotel: which base makes the Bovilla Lake tour pickup easy, and what each area is like.

Updated October 2026

For a Bovilla Lake day, stay in central Tirana, either in Blloku or in the streets around Skanderbeg Square: the tour vans collect from hotels across the centre, the drive to the dam takes an hour to an hour and a half, and you are back in time for dinner. If you are in Albania for the beach, a hotel in Durrës or Golem works too, because most of the most-reviewed tours pick up there at the same price, with an earlier start.

How the pickup works, and why the area matters

Pickup details arrive by WhatsApp the evening before or on the morning of the tour, with a time window (on the most-reviewed Krujë tour, 8:00 to 8:45 for the morning tour, 13:00 to 13:45 for the afternoon). Two notes from the listings matter for choosing a hotel: if your street is closed to vans or in a restricted traffic area, you walk a few minutes, sometimes up to 15, to a pickup point on a main road; and coastal pickups from Durrës and Golem take longer in summer traffic. A hotel on or near a main street saves you the walk.

Blloku: cafés, bars and an easy evening

Blloku was the closed residential quarter of Albania’s communist leadership; ordinary Albanians could not enter it until it opened in the early 1990s, and Enver Hoxha’s villa still stands there. Today it is Tirana’s café and nightlife district, a grid of tree-lined streets full of bars, restaurants and small hotels, a short walk south-west of Skanderbeg Square. It suits travellers who want to walk out of the hotel into an evening scene. The trade-off is noise on weekend nights, and some of its inner streets are tight for minibuses, so check that your hotel is on a street a van can reach.

Around Skanderbeg Square: the centre

Skanderbeg Square is the centre of Tirana, rebuilt as a large pedestrian square and reopened in 2017, with the National History Museum, the Et’hem Bey Mosque and the Skanderbeg statue around it. Hotels in the surrounding streets put you within walking distance of most of the city sights, and a short bus or taxi ride from the Dajti cable car. It suits a short stay and a first visit. The square itself is car-free, so pickups are on the streets around it.

Durrës and Golem: if the beach is the point

Durrës is about 50 km from the Bovilla dam by road, on the coast west of Tirana, and Golem is the long strip of beach hotels south of it. Most of the most-reviewed tours pick up on the coast, at the same price as from Tirana, and AlbaNestTours’ tour from Durrës, Golem and Tirana is built around coastal pickups. Expect to leave earlier and get back later than guests in Tirana.

How many days in Tirana is enough?

Two full days covers the city and one trip out; three lets you do Bovilla, Krujë and the Dajti cable car without rushing. The day-trip comparison weighs them up. A good order for a short stay:

  • Day 1, arrival: a free walking tour of the centre (several start in the late morning or early afternoon), then dinner in Blloku. Booking is free and the guides work for tips. See the free walking tours of Tirana on GuruWalk.
  • Day 2: the Bovilla Lake tour in the morning, back by mid-afternoon, then the cable car up Dajti if it is not a Tuesday.
  • Day 3: Krujë, or the coast at Durrës.
