How to Get to Bovilla Lake from Tirana
Bovilla Lake is 20.6 km from Tirana, no bus goes there and the last stretch is a rough track. Tour, car or taxi compared, from Tirana and Durrës (Oct 2026).
The easy way to Bovilla Lake is a day tour with hotel pickup: there is no public bus to the lake, and the last part of the 20.6 km road from Tirana is a rough, potholed track. Shared tours from Tirana or Durrës cost from from €23 a person with the entrance fees included (checked October 2026), and the drive takes an hour to an hour and a half each way. Driving yourself works in a car with good ground clearance and dry weather; a taxi works if you can find a driver who will take the road and wait.

How far is Bovilla Lake from Tirana?
The dam is 20.6 km from Skanderbeg Square by road, about 14 km north-east of the city centre in a straight line. The distance is not the problem; the surface is. The first part runs on paved roads out through the northern suburbs, then the road becomes a narrow gravel and dirt track with potholes, shared in places with trucks, before a winding climb to the dam. That is why the drive takes an hour or more for 20 km, and why the tours give the same advice in different words: the road to Bovilla is bumpy, unpaved in parts, and slow.
By tour: what you get for about €23
A shared tour is the cheapest door-to-door option for one or two people. The van collects you at your hotel (or a nearby main road if your street is closed to vehicles), stops at Bovilla Canyon for photos, and parks at the dam, where the guide leads the climb to the viewpoint. Entrance fees, including the stairs ticket, are included on the main tours; food and tips are not. Pickup details come by WhatsApp the evening before or on the morning of the tour, so give a working number when you book.
The four most-reviewed tours are all priced within a couple of euros of each other (checked October 2026):

Driving yourself
You can drive to Bovilla Lake, and in dry weather many visitors do. Three things decide whether you should. The car: the unpaved section is rutted and potholed, with a bridge on the canyon stretch where a low car can scrape; an SUV or a car with good clearance makes it comfortable, a small city car makes it slow. The contract: check whether your rental agreement covers unpaved roads before you go, because many do not. The weather: after rain the track turns muddy and slippery, and it is the worst day to try it in a borrowed car.
If you do drive, start early. The road is narrow, so you will pull over for oncoming vans, and the viewpoint is at its busiest in the middle of the day. One October 2026 reviewer of the most-reviewed tour, having seen the road from the van, wrote that they would not recommend driving there yourself.
By taxi
There is no fixed taxi fare to Bovilla, and many Tirana drivers turn the job down because of the road. If you find one who will go, agree the price for the return trip and the waiting time before you set off, since there is no taxi rank at the dam to get you back. Published travel guides quote figures from about €25 one way to 2,500 to 4,000 lek (roughly €25 to €35) for a return. For two people that is already more than a shared tour, which includes the guide and the entrance fees; for a group of four it can make sense.
Is there a bus to Bovilla Lake?
No. No public bus or minibus line serves the lake. City buses run into the northern suburbs, but none goes up the track to the dam, and walking the rest is not realistic. If you are not driving, a tour or a taxi is the way in.
From Durrës or Golem
Durrës is about 50 km from the dam by road, and the coastal hotels in Golem a little further. Most of the most-reviewed tours pick up on the coast at the same price as from Tirana, but expect an earlier pickup and a longer day: operators warn that the drive takes longer in summer traffic. The tour built around coastal pickups is AlbaNestTours’ Bovilla Lake tour from Durrës, Golem and Tirana, with the Gamti stairs ticket included. There is more on choosing a base in where to stay in Tirana.
So which way should you go?
Pick the one that fits your group:
Shared day tour from Tirana
Pickup, the bad road, the guide and the entrance fees for less than a taxi.
Check dates →Tour from Durrës or Golem
Hotel pickup on the coast, the stairs ticket included, small-group option for four.
See the Durrës tour →4x4 SUV day
An off-road SUV for the track; anyone who does not want to hike rides up to the top.
See the 4x4 day →Prices, ratings and review counts from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026. Operators price by season, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
With your own high-clearance car and a dry forecast, drive; with a group of four and a willing driver, a taxi can compete. Everyone else is better off on the tour.
