The Gamti Mountain Hike: How Hard Is It?
The Bovilla viewpoint hike is about 1 km and 160 m up, 30 to 40 minutes, with metal stairs at the top. Who it suits, who should skip it, and the 4x4 option.
The hike most Bovilla tours call “Gamti Mountain” is short and steep: about 1 km and 160 m of climbing from the dam to the viewpoint, from roughly 460 m to 620 m above sea level, which tours give 30 to 40 minutes on the way up. The path is loose and rocky in places and ends on metal stairs fixed to the cliff. Anyone of ordinary fitness who is comfortable with heights can do it slowly; anyone with a real fear of heights or a heart condition should book a day where the hike is optional.

The route, step by step
Tours park at the dam, where the climb starts. The trail rises steeply up the west side of the canyon, on a mix of dirt, gravel and rock, and the view gets better with every bend. Partway up, a restaurant with a terrace looks out over the lake; some groups stop there for a coffee on the way up, and anyone who decides the last part is not for them can wait there with much the same view. The final stretch to the viewpoint, known as the Balcony of Bovilla, climbs metal stairs bolted into the rock face, with a platform at the top. There is a small fee for the stairs, which the main tours include in the price.

One operator publishes its trail in numbers: about 2 km up and down (about 1 km each way), from 460 m to 620 m, a 160 m climb. Another describes “a real hike of about 2 km each way” on a day that also walks down towards the reservoir, so the total depends on the tour. Durations on the itineraries run from 30 minutes of hiking on the fastest to two hours for the whole lake-and-viewpoint walk on the 4x4 day.
How hard does it feel?
The climb is short, so fitness matters less than footing and nerves. Recent reviewers on the most-reviewed tours put it plainly: “the climb up to the viewpoint is quite steep, and you need to be prepared for that”; “a challenging climb without much to hold on to”; “the hike is challenging but not too long and very rewarding (wear shoes with some grip!)”. Others found it “absolutely doable for everyone, even for those who are not in shape”. Heat is the variable that changes it most: in July and August Tirana’s average high is about 32°C, and the slope gets the sun.
Every listing we read rules out the same people. Not suitable: anyone afraid of heights, people with heart problems, and, depending on the tour, people with vertigo or low fitness, travellers over 65 or 70, pregnant travellers and young children (under 8 on SkyKey Travel’s tour). Take those lines seriously; the stairs at the top are the part that stops people.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip. Trainers with worn soles slide on the loose stones going down.
- Water, more than you think in summer. The restaurant sells drinks, but not on the trail.
- Sun protection from May to September, and a layer for the wind at the top in winter.
- Cash for lunch or a coffee at the restaurant; food is not included on the shared tours.

If you would rather not climb
You still get the view. On a shared tour you can stop at the restaurant terrace and let the group go on; one reviewer did exactly that and found the restaurant had “just as amazing views”. If you know in advance that you will not climb, book the 4x4 day instead: the SUV drives anyone who does not want to hike up to the top, and the guide shows the path to those who do.
Book the day that matches your legs:
Guided day tour with the hike
The guide sets the pace on the climb and helps on the steep parts. Pickup in Tirana or Durrës.
Check dates →4x4 day, hiking optional
Driven up to the restaurant terrace if you prefer; the hike is your choice on the day.
See the 4x4 day →Small-group hike and Krujë
Up to 8 people, so the climb goes at your pace, then Krujë's castle and bazaar.
See the Krujë day →Prices, ratings and review counts from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026. Operators price by season, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
A note on the 4x4 day: its listing sets limits for the shared vehicles (not suitable over 100 kg, or for travellers taller than about 180 cm in the back seats), and offers a second seat if you need the room.
Is “Gamti Mountain” the summit?
Not quite. The tours use “Gamti Mountain” for the viewpoint hike on the mountain’s lower slope above the dam. The summit of Gamti is higher, to the north-west, and is not part of these day tours. What you climb is the short, steep path to the Balcony; what you see is the whole canyon.
