Can You Swim in Bovilla Lake?

No: Bovilla is Tirana's drinking-water reservoir and swimming is forbidden. What you can do there, and the summer 4x4 tour with a canyon swim stop (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

No, you cannot swim in Bovilla Lake. It is a reservoir that supplies much of Tirana’s drinking water, swimming in it is forbidden, and signs at the lake say so. Tour operators repeat the rule in their own listings, one of them because the lake is a protected area, and several list swimming and diving among the things not allowed on the trip. The water is for looking at: from the viewpoint above the dam, which is the reason to go.

Why the rule exists

Bovilla is not a natural lake. A 91 m rock-fill dam across the river Tërkuzë, completed in the 1990s, holds back the water at the mouth of a limestone canyon inside Dajti Mountain National Park, and the reservoir has been one of Tirana’s main water sources since the late 1990s. Keeping people out of the water protects the supply, and the reservoir has had its share of pollution worries from the villages and erosion around it. The odd old review mentions a swim; that does not make it allowed, and the shore is mostly mud and rock anyway.

What you can do at Bovilla instead

  • The viewpoint. The climb from the dam to the Balcony of Bovilla, about 1 km and 160 m up, is what the day is built around. The Gamti hike guide has the details.
  • Lunch with the view. A restaurant on the slope above the dam has a terrace over the lake.
  • The canyon. Most tours stop at Bovilla Canyon on the way in for photos.
  • Walk the dam. It is flat, paved and gives the first full view up the reservoir.

Fishing, littering and climbing on the cliffs are also on the operators’ not-allowed lists.

Where you can swim on a Bovilla day

In the river canyon below, in summer, on a tour that includes it. Amazing Albania’s Bovilla Lake 4x4 tour adds a stop of around 30 to 40 minutes in the canyon on the way back, for the view and a swim, from May to September only; its list of things to bring includes swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes. The lake itself stays off limits on that tour too: swimming and diving appear on its own not-allowed list, which refers to the reservoir.

If a swim is part of why you want to go, that is the tour to book between May and September. It costs from €45 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.8 from 428 reviews, and the hike to the viewpoint is optional: the SUV drives anyone who does not want to climb up to the restaurant.

Some other listings use the word “swimming” in their titles. Check where, and in which months, before you book: the reservoir is not the answer on any of them.

Can you swim in a lake near Tirana?

Not in Bovilla. For a swim on the same trip, the nearest sea is at Durrës, about 50 km from the dam by road, with long sandy beaches and the beach hotels that many Bovilla tours pick up from. A morning at Bovilla and an afternoon on the beach at Durrës is an easy summer day if you are staying on the coast; see where to stay.

In winter

The canyon swim stop runs only from May to September, and nobody swims at Bovilla in winter. The tours keep running all year for the view; Bovilla Lake in winter covers what changes.
