Bovilla Lake in Winter, and the Best Time to Go
Bovilla Lake tours run all year. Month by month: rain, heat, the muddy track and the light, and why April-June and September-October suit the climb best.
Yes, you can visit Bovilla Lake in winter: the main day tours run all year, and Smart Tour Albania’s Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain Day Trip departs every day of the year, cancelling only when the weather makes it unsafe. Winter is the wet season, so the track is muddier and some days are grey, but the climb is cooler and the viewpoint is quieter. For the climb itself, the kindest months are April to June and September to October.

Winter: November to February
What is good: the climb is cool, the light is low and sharp on clear days, and the viewpoint is far less crowded than in August. A recent reviewer wrote that autumn is “great too as the views are just as ideal”.
What to plan for: November and December are the wettest months of the year, at 151 mm and 139 mm. Rain turns the unpaved stretch of road to mud, which is when a tour van or a 4x4 is worth more than ever, and wet rock makes the stairs at the top slippery. Wind at the viewpoint makes it colder than Tirana; bring a warm layer and gloves for the metal railings. The canyon swim stop on the 4x4 tour runs only from May to September. Short days matter too: morning departures give you the best light.
Book with free cancellation (all the main tours offer it up to 24 hours before), check the forecast the day before, and do not take a borrowed car up the track after a wet week.
Spring and autumn: the sweet spot
April to June and September to October bring highs of about 20°C to 29°C, the reservoir at its greenest and bluest, and a climb that does not cook you. April has the most rainy days of the spring, so keep a spare day if you can; September and October are warm, with more showers as October goes on (about 99 mm and 112 mm of rain).
Summer: July and August
The driest months, at about 40 mm, and the hottest, with average highs of 32°C to 33°C. The climb is in the sun, and tour notes warn that heat makes it feel much harder. Take the morning departure, carry plenty of water, and expect the viewpoint to be busiest around the middle of the day. Summer is when the canyon swim stop on the 4x4 day earns its price; the reservoir itself stays closed to swimming all year (why).
